About the course:
This course will cover the materials chemistry aspects of energy dense analogues of current state-of-the-art Li-ion batteries, such as Li metal, Li-S, Li-air etc. followed by a deep dive on alternate battery chemistries (“Beyond Li-ion”). The course will critically cover the synthesis/manufacturing, physical and chemical properties of these materials, and the relation to their electrochemistry/battery performance. There will be a critical look at the pros and cons of Li-ion and “beyond Li-ion” chemistries derived from their material properties, energy and power density, and cycle life. The key limitations/challenges that need to be overcome will be discussed.
