Introduction to the course

Compressed Biogas (CBG) is an industrial form of biogas generated through anaerobic digestion from various waste biomass sources like agricultural residue, cattle dung, sugarcane press mud, poultry waste, biodegradable part of municipal solid waste, and sewage treatment plant waste. The biogas generated from anaerobic digestion can be purified to increase the methane content and can subsequently compressed so that it can be used for various commercial applications. The CBG is similar to compressed natural gas (CNG) in its composition and energy content. Due to this similarity, CBG is a greener and a locally available alternative to CNG for automotive and power generation applications. CBG also has other benefits such as sustainable waste management, additional revenue sources for farmers, and greater entrepreneurship and employment opportunities, particularly in rural areas.

The Government of India (GOI), through the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) and PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), has proposed the SATAT (Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation) scheme in 2018. Through this scheme, it is targeted to set-up 5000 biogas plants producing 15 MMTPA of compressed biogas (CBG). Although the response to the scheme has been encouraging, many associated challenges still need to be addressed.

The short-term training program is designed to cover current status and challenges in the area of CBG. The training program will set the foundation by discussing the basics of anaerobic digestion. Subsequently, biogas production from different feedstock of relevance will be discussed. Available technologies and practical challenges will be reviewed. Finally, the aspect of scale-up and commercialization will be investigated through case studies. At the end of the course, participants will be expected to have a broach understanding of the science, technologies, and business models as well as challenges associated with CBG.

Registration for External Users (Other than Oil & Gas PSUs) . New users need to register to the IIT Bombay CEP portal to apply for the training course.
