Seminar Hall, Ground Floor, Vanvihar Guest house, IIT Bombay.

Introduction to the course:

Chemical industry is continually engaged with projects, brownfield or greenfield, small or big, simple or complex.  Meticulous planning and execution of these projects to deliver them within the approved timelines and budget determine their success.  However, many chemical and other project engineers do not have formal training in project management to achieve this success.  The course intends to provide this training to the participants.

Broad Objectives:

The objective of the course is to provide training in various aspects of project management, from concept to commissioning, including ideation / identification, feasibility, planning, engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and overall project management.

Course Outline:

The following topics would be covered in the course: Categories of projects; drivers of projects; genesis of ideas for projects; awareness of different regulations and laws; technical, market, commercial, financial and environmental feasibilities; basic engineering packages; process design and safety; overview of project management; conceptual phase; planning phase including planning strategy and risk management, execution phase; monitoring and control phase; completion phase; management of all relevant branches of engineering, procurement and construction; lessons learned review; role of project manager; team building.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

·  Classify different categories of projects in the chemical and process industries

·  Identify key drivers that initiate and justify projects

·  Explain the genesis of project ideas from technical, market, and strategic perspectives

·  Evaluate technical, market, commercial, financial, and environmental feasibility of projects

·  Explain the basic engineering packages

·  Estimate detailed project costs using appropriate methodologies and data

·  Understand process design principles and safety considerations in project development

·  Describe the overall project management lifecycle

·  Explain activities in the conceptual phase of a project

·  Develop planning strategies, including risk management approaches

·  Outline execution phase activities in EPC projects

·  Apply monitoring and control techniques to track project performance

·  Summarize key steps in project completion and handover

·  Analyze lessons learned to improve future project outcomes

·  Define the role and responsibilities of a project manager

·  Execute detailed commissioning procedures for process plants and utilities

Targeted Audience/ Pre-requisite:

Middle level engineers and managers with 3 -10 years of work experience wishing formal training in chemical project management
